I'm also trying to compile a list of organizations in and around Calgary who do good work helping Moms and families in need.* This list is a continual work in progress. Please let me know if you know of an organization who should be listed here. While there are lots of non-profit organizations in the community that do good work, I'm going to try to limit this list to those that help Moms specifically.
Made by Momma - This Calgary-area charity is 100% volunteer-run. They help families facing situations of adversity by providing homemade meals, baked goods, new and gently-used baby and children's items, a quick houseclean, or even just a friendly visit. You know, the stuff that gets pushed to the bottom of the list when you're dealing with a tough situation.
Neighbourlink Calgary - NeighbourLink is a non-profit organization providing Calgarians who are living below the poverty line with free furniture, household items, baby supplies, food hamper deliveries, bus tickets and more.
Role Mothers - This initiative is designed to encourage and empower Moms to find ways to get more involved in their communities and give back along the way.
The Brenda Strafford Centre for the Prevention of Domestic Violence - Getting out of a tough situation when you have children to think about requires tremendous courage. The Brenda Strafford Centre gives these women and their families a safe place.
YWCA of Calgary - What doesn't the YWCA do to help vulnerable women and children in our community (and communities across the country)? They offer a variety of programming focused on ending domestic violence, homelessness, and poverty. The YWCA of Calgary also supports children and families through early childhood development and health & wellness programs.
Scott Smed Memorial Foundation - I have known too many women who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss. The Scott Smed Memorial Foundation started as a way to provide support for those families who were leaving the hospital with heavy hearts, but no baby. Since then, they have grown to provide support for families and children around the world.
*Please let me know about any other organizations you know of that would be suitable for this list at workmomchronicles@gmail.com
