What does it mean to be a girl?
Are you made of sugar and spice and
everything nice?
Or are you made of fire?
Do you sit back and let others
determine your path?
Or do you choose the road that suits
you best?
Dolls and trucks and dresses and dirt
are all the same to you.
You have dreams for yourself beyond
what others can imagine for you.
You want to fly, to run, to eat
cookies. To play in the snow, in the sun, in your pajamas.
You bear the weight of protection and
perfection equally, whether you know it or not.
They may silence you, but they can
never take your voice. Remember that.
You will love passionately and live
fearlessly...if they let you.
I'll let you.
The
United Nations has declared October 11 to be the International Day of the Girl
Child to bring awareness of the challenges facing girls around the world,
particularly those in developing nations who lack access to the education that
can lead them out of poverty. Please visit Because I am A Girl to
find out about ways we can support these important initiatives all year round.
