Twenty-one

Today, on her 21st birthday, I just want to let my sister Julie know just how proud and grateful I am to have her in my life.

You have taught us so much, whether you know it or not.

Like how to be grateful for small victories, such as when you eat something other than ice cream at a restaurant.

Or how to focus on what people can do, not on what they can't.

One of my big regrets is that I wasn't around much while you were growing up; I graduated high school and moved away before you were five. I feel like maybe I've been less of a sister to you because I haven't been there, like there's so much more I could have done.

Still, I think we both know that you've had parents and friends who've looked out for you and looked after you better than anyone else could. You don't want for much, if anything.

You have a good life, surrounded by people who love you, whether they're near or far. My birthday wish for you is that more people would realize that what you have is, in fact, a good life. That more people would see you for what you are, instead of what you are not.

I wish that all families would have the opportunity to learn everything that you have taught us.

Happy Birthday.
